The Insights tab is your per-student command center — metrics, AI-generated analysis, targeted session recommendations, and full session history, all in one place. This guide walks through every section and how to act on it.
Step 1 — Select a Student
Use the dropdown in the top-right to choose which student to view — type their name to search or scroll to select. All data on the page updates instantly when you switch students. You'll also see a Last Updated timestamp with a Refresh link if you want to pull the latest data mid-session.
Step 2 — Review the Metrics
The Metrics Insights section shows five numbers that represent the student's complete activity history — this includes sessions assigned by any teacher, as well as sessions the student started independently (Skill Sessions and Homework Help).
Step 3 — Read Strengths & Areas for Improvement
Below the metrics, Beacon by K12 Tutoring generates a detailed Strengths analysis and Areas for Improvement analysis. These are rich, paragraph-length summaries that describe specific concepts the student has demonstrated mastery in and specific gaps where they continue to struggle.
Step 4 — Recommended Next Sessions
Directly below Strengths and Areas for Improvement, Beacon by K12 Tutoring generates a numbered list of Recommended Next Sessions — targeted skill areas with a brief explanation of why each is recommended based on the student's recent performance.
Each recommendation has a View button. Clicking it opens a modal showing pre-selected exercises for that skill. From there you have three options:
- Select exercises and Assign this Session — choose up to 3 exercises from the list and assign directly to the student in one click
- Manually Configure Session — takes you to the Assignments tab where you can build a fully custom session using those skills as a starting point
Step 5 — Go Deeper with Ask Beacon
Ask Beacon is a chat panel focused entirely on your student's progress. It has full context on what they've been working on, where they're getting stuck, and how their understanding is changing over time. Ask in your own words — it's designed to help you make sense of the data so you can better support your student. You can minimize the panel to have a full screen view of insights or maximize the panel to an expanded view.
Try things like:
- "What concepts has this student been practicing most?"
- "Where do they seem to need extra support?"
- "Are there patterns in the mistakes they're making?"
- "How has their confidence or engagement shifted across sessions?"
- "Write a short update for this student's guardian."
- "What should I assign next based on their recent sessions?"
Step 6 — Review Session History
The Session History table at the bottom of the Insights page shows past sessions for the selected student. Use the Filter by Educator dropdown to narrow to sessions assigned by a specific educator — including yourself or any other educator who has worked with this student.
Each row in the table shows:
- Date Started — when the student opened the session
- Assigned By — the teacher or tutor who created the assignment
- Status — In Progress, Completed, or Not Started, with a badge showing exercises completed out of total
- Time Spent — active time in that specific session
- Session Insights — View Insights, Generate Insights, or Not enough activity
- Session Links — the assignment name as a clickable link that opens the full Session View
What the Session View Shows
Clicking a session link opens a dedicated page for that individual session. It has three parts:
- Session Analysis (top) — a per-session Strengths and Areas for Improvement analysis. A Last Updated timestamp shows when it was last generated, and an Update Analysis button lets you refresh it.
- Chat transcript (left) — the complete conversation between the student and Beacon by K12 Tutoring.
- Exercise panel (right) — the actual problem the student was working on, with the question text and expected answer visible.
